The Sweetness of Summer

Summer Sizzles…

As my daughter and I each celebrated a birthday, and my husband and I celebrated a wedding anniversary this month, I am reminded that Summer brings enjoyment, rejuvenation, and a time for connection to family and friends. Ringing in the Summer season from Memorial Day, our country’s independence on July 4th, and a farewell to Summer and remembrance as we celebrate Labor Day in September. We celebrate weddings, showers, picnics, reunions, splashing in the pool, beach tranquility, a great book, fishing, boating, camping time, backyard barbeques, the laughter of children, ruby-red hot-from-the-sun tomatoes, zucchini, zucchini, zucchini, and a dripping ice cream cone in the hands of the child in each of us.

We Live, We Laugh, We Love, We Connect, We Celebrate…!

Speaking of tomatoes…

Who doesn’t love a red, ripe, juicy, hot-from-the-sun garden tomato? It brings me right back to my grandfather’s garden, his refuge, the heat, sunshine, his hundreds of tomatoes, and the fulfillment at the end of a hot Summer’s day! As a little girl, I ran home after spending an afternnoon of creating the most wonderful mud pies, went into his garden, picked a ruby-ripe tomato, and bit into that tomato as if I bit into an apple. Oh, the flavor…

Summer was full of fresh tomato slices, tomato salads, fried tomatoes, tomato sauces, stuffed tomatoes, brushettas, and let us not foget…the canning process of the bushels and bushels of ripe-ready tomatoes! If you do not have the pleasure of you own garden, visit your local farm stands and stock up ~ tis the season ~ Create!

Some of my favorites: Create a wonderful fresh tomato salad with fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, and a wonderful Balsamic Salad Dressing -Page 31, “MaMa Mia Cucina“. Add a loaf of your favorite Crusty Italian Bread, a nice glass of wine, and great company!   ~ YUM!

Next… we’re talkin’ Zucchini, Zucchini, and Zucchini !!! For now, my friends, enjoy the season of fresh-tasting tomatoes.

About Cynthia Ferich

After writing and self-publishing “MaMa Mia Cucina” in 2007, Cynthia's writing, cooking and culinary teachings evolved into being as an entity surrounding food, fun, family and friends.

In an effort to capture her family’s ‘old world’ Italian recipes for future generations to enjoy, her grandmother, ‘Noni’, and Cynthia joined forces. "She measured, I wrote, and we cooked."

During her grandmother's latter 80 years, she traveled in memory through her life, as they shared in stories of a lifetime and long ago. As they shared this final chapter in her life, what Cynthia soon discovered through all of the measuring, cooking, sharing in the love of a family, and in the love of a friendship, was the passion for cooking, and a love that nourishes us all… It’s all about the FOOD!
